Don't Let the Heat Get You Down, Lighten Up August 10 2016

cycling cap, compact cargo bike, lightweight bike lock, and bike helmet

With this oppressive heat and humidity we got going on here in Philadelphia the last thing we want is heavy. Here are a few light weight products that won't drag you down. The Abus Granit Futura Mini lock is featherweight compared to it's welterweight cousins but still as strong. Nutcase added it's Metroride line of helmets as a lighter alternative to their Street Helmet. Super lightweight and with a slim profile you'll forget you have it on (but don't worry you still do; your head is protected.)  GoCycling's sweat-wicking cycling cap is gossamer. And with it's Philadelphia graphics you'll be representing the City Of Brotherly Love in the coolest possible way. Think all cargo bikes literally weigh a ton? The Boda Boda V3 by Yuba is one of the lightest compact cargo bikes on the market. Starting at 41lbs (before add-ons) it can easily be lifted up steps to store indoors where it's safest. The newest version can now hold two Yepp Maxi Easyfit kid seats on the back and there's still room for one Yepp Mini up front. That's three kids you can haul around town on this zippy bike.

Silver Babboe Toddler Seat in Babboe City Cargo Bike

Cradle your littler ones in comfort and safety with the Babboe Cargo Toddler Seat. Available in silver, blue, or dark grey and specifically designed for Babboe Cargo bikes, the toddler seat shell is made of dense but cushion-y foam that can withstand the impact of a collision should one occur. It also provides neck and back support, super important when sleepy heads nod off. Its easy to install, just make sure to leave some space for the rain tent, but we can always do that for you. And, as a heads up, another Babboe Big Cargo Tricycle and Babboe Big Raintent are on their way!

Yepp Mini: Try Before You Buy January 30 2016

The Yepp Mini front mounted child seat is a great way to travel with your littlest kid. Attached to your stem and nestled between your arms, your toddler will have a great view of the journey while enabling you to chat with him or her along the way. Not sure if it's the right seat for you? We have one set up to test ride on a Simcoe Classic step through bike. Don't worry about the weather because you can give it a quick spin around the shop. We have plenty of room! Need more time to decide? We can attach it to one of our rental bikes. It comes in a range of colors (the purple one above was spotted near Rittenhouse Square this past summer) and will carry a child up to 33lbs. And it comes with an integrated lock so you know it will still be there after stopping for a diaper change. We also stock Yepp Mini accessories like the wind screen and sleep roll.

How to Keep Your Cargo Bike Safe From Marauders January 08 2016

So you've decided to buy a Babboe City or Gazelle Cabby cargo bike but where do you store it? Like many city dwellers you live in a row home or apartment building without a garage or access to a back yard. Your only choice is to park it out front but with the threat of bike theft you don't want to put your new investment at risk. That's why we sell the ABUS Granit Floor Anchor. It mounts securely to the sidewalk with four thick expanding bolts that once properly installed aren't going anywhere and has a hardened steel shackle that's large enough to fit a hefty ABUS chain lock (we have an assortment to choose from) or two smaller locks. You'll need a heavy duty drill to install. Don't have one and you live within a few miles from the shop? For an additional fee we can arrange to install it for you (ask for details.)

New Xtracycle Edgerunners May 29 2015

The new Edgerunners have arrived! We have the 24D model in two sizes, 16.5 inch and 18 inch. $1999 plus tax gets you the bike as well as the new & improved waterproof cargo bags and the kickback center stand. Add-ons like the hooptie rails, u-tube foot rests, and a Yepp Maxi Easyfit (or two) will make this your new favorite family hauling machine.

Nihola: Cargo Trike from Copenhagen May 16 2015

The Nihola Family cargo bike is the most popular model made by Nihola for families with children.

The Family cargo bike can carry up to 100 kg in the cabin and there is space for 2 children of up to the age of 7-8 years old on the bench. As an alternative a carry cot or car seat can be used in the bottom of the cabin and a child or adult can sit on the bench. The bench can easily be removed without tools (if for example you want to fit just a carry cot).

The cabin, which surrounds and protects the children, gives extra peace of mind because the frame is built up of a closed double tube frame without corners consisting of top and bottom frame tubes that are welded together with 5 vertical steel sections.

The Nihola Family cargo bike has, after testing, been called the best 3-wheeled cargo bike for child transportation by the Danish newspaper Politiken and the Dutch ”Fietsersbond” (Dutch Cyclist Union).

While we don't have any in stock (YET), we can order one for you. Call for pricing.

Comfortable and Safe Yepp Child Seats October 14 2014

You know Crocs those slip on shoes you love to hate but secretly own a pair because they're so comfy? Well the Dutch company Yepp makes their kids seats out of a similar molded rubber like material. What's great about that is it's antibacterial and shock absorbant making for a much more comfortable ride for your little one. The Yepp Mini mounts on the stem just behind your handlebars and is ideal for tiny tots 33lbs and under (just make sure they're able to hold their head upright.) Add-ons like the Sleep Roll provide a soft cushion to rest little heads when they nod off (and that'll happen) and the Windshield make the ride even more comfortable. Two different types of mounting brackets make it work with just about any bicycle. For slightly bigger kids up to 48lbs there is the Yepp Maxi rear seat available in two different models. The Standard model comes with it's own support rack that mounts to the bicycle seat tube. Since the Standard doesn't work with all bikes they've made the Easyfit. If you have your own rack you may need an additional adapter to attach this seat. If you don't have a rack Yepp makes a very strong one that we recommend. Yepp seats work well with cargo bikes too; it's Xtracycles' and Yuba's favorite. Whichever Yepp seat you chose all have soft secure harness systems, adjustable foot rests, and are easy to put on and take off. We have all the models (in assorted colors), adapters and racks in stock. Bring your bike in and we'll figure out what option works best.

Come to the Philadelphia Bicycle Expo, November 9th & 10th, where we hope to have a Yepp Junior to show. This seat is for bigger kids up to 75lbs and who are already used to riding on a bicycle. It's currently unavailable in the US but we hope to start selling them by mid November.

It's coming! September 30 2014

Here at the shop we're gearing up for the 2014 Philly Bike Expo that's just a little over a month away. If you ride a bike or are thinking about riding a bike and you haven't been to this great consumer show yet you should go. In its 5th year it's back at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, November 8th & 9th, but in a bigger and better space with tons of vendors that'll have any and everything cycle-centric, and new this year, an indoor bike demo area. We'll be there with a selection of cargo bikes and city bikes and with sponsorship from Abus locks, Brooks saddles, Xtracycle, and Yuba. We'll be showing off some new products, like new childrens seats from Yepp and the kiddie size Flip-Flop cargo bike from Yuba, and also have some fun stuff for sale so make sure you check out our booth. Want more info on the uses of cargo and family bikes? We'll be giving a seminar about the marvels of those multi-functioning machines. You can purchase tickets for the show and seminars at our shop: one day pass $8, day pass with seminars $12, and all-access pass $20.

Cargo Bikes for Everyone! September 26 2014

With the pleasant Autumn cycling weather upon us, now is a good time to look into getting that cargo bike you've always dreamed about. We carry cargo bikes big, suitable for transporting your kids to school, and small, to haul your groceries and beer home after work. Our long rear loading bikes, we stock the Xtracycle Edgerunner and Yuba Mundo, can carry up to three children and with an additional seat up front, like the Yepp Mini, your littlest one can join the fun. Add-ons like side rails and seat cushions make the ride comfortable for all. Our front loading cargos, Gazelle Cabby and Babboe City, let you communicate easily with your two, three or maybe four kids, and feature rear racks allowing for additional carrying capacity. Don't have kids but need to get a lot of large bulky items around town? We can get you a Larry Vs. Harry Bullitt framekit that lets you decide what components and what kind of container will do the job. We'll do the build too. The possibilities are endless! And if your needs are on a smaller scale we have the Yuba Boda Boda step-through, Soma Pick-Up Artist, and Civia Halsted. Despite their smaller sizing these lil' guys can haul a sh*t ton of gear. Philly streets are flat for the most part so riding a cargo bike (from 7 gears up to 24 depending on the make and model) is a breeze but if hills impede your ride a Bionx electric assist can be added to make your journey a lot smoother. Come to test ride Monday through Fridays 10 to 6, Saturdays 10 to 5. And make sure to check out the 2014 Philadelphia Bike Expo, November 8th and 9th at the Convention Center. We'll be there with some of our cargo bikes and test rides are available at the Expo.

September Happenings September 02 2014

With Labor Day marking the official end of summer fun, it doesn't mean the fun has to stop. There are a number of bike friendly events taking place this month. To start things off, we'll be closing early on Tuesday, September 9th to fly to Las Vegas, baby, for America's biggest bicycle industry show, Interbike. We'll be back on Saturday, September 13th but don't expect us to tell you what we saw or what we did because, as you know, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. On Friday the 19th, Park(ing) Day kicks off the busy weekend. When you're out and about that day be sure to look for the mini green spaces taking over parking spots throughout city streets. On Saturday the 20th, come check out the Spring Garden Street Pop-Up Greenway. The 900 block of Spring Garden Street will be closed off for the day (don't worry we'll be open) with food, beer, and entertainment to bring awareness to this project to create tree lined barricaded bike lanes down the center of Spring Garden St. Rounding up the weekend on Sunday the 21st we'll be down at the Fleisher Art Memorial in south Philly for ABCs of Family Biking from 11am until 3pm. The folks that organize Kidical Mass hold this special event for bike curious parents and their kids to meet other like minded families, get tips on riding in the city, and try out some alternative family bikes. After such a busy month you'll probably want to unwind by attending the Philadelphia Bikes & Beers event. The name of this one pretty much says it all. Starts and ends at Yards Brewing with stops at three bars in between. Registration required. Event begins at 9:30am and 20% of proceeds will go to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.

News Flash: Kids Love Cargo Bikes! May 08 2014

Kid tested, kid approved cargo bikes were out and about at Kidstock, a fun free event organized by Fishtown play group By My Side, this past Sunday at Liberty Lands.

We showed up on what started out a chilly grey day with our trusty trio of family bikes: Gazelle Cabby, Babboe City, and Xtracycle Edgerunner. When the spring sunshine finally made an appearance test rides really started to take off. David and Simon gave dozens of rides to dozens of children and even a few parents had a go. We can't tell you how happy we are to talk to parents about these amazing bikes and hear their little ones insist they buy one. If anyone missed the event or didn't get a chance to ride a bike that day we are open Monday through Saturday for test rides.
