British Bicycle Sale: Brompton and Pashley Bikes Reduced February 01 2017
All our British made bicycles, in stock, are on sale during the month of February. Now's the time to get that Brompton folding bike you've always dreamed of getting, up to 10% off MSRP. We love how well they are made and how smoothly they ride. We really love how compactly they fold. Ok, maybe not as small as the one in the photo above but you can still pick it up with one hand. Because these bikes come in umpteen variations from different size gearing, handlebar styles, color, and accessories. Come in to test ride to see which one will suit you best.
We've also reduced the price of the two Pashleys in stock, up to 15% off MSRP. The Clubman Country (pictured above) is one of those bikes that can do just about all from traversing city streets to touring and look good while doing it. The bike features all the classic English details like Reynolds 531 Cro-moly tubing, lugged frame, and matching Brooks leather saddle and handlebar tape with updated Campagnolo and Shimano componentry. The versatile Aurora has a mixte frame also made from English company Reynolds 531 tubing. With it's straight bars and 8 speed internal hub you'll ride through city and country in comfort and class.
Both Brompton and Pashley build bikes with longevity that will be loved, with a little care and maintenance (we can take care of that), for years to come.
Because we want you to feel the love (of cycling), we'll be having a sale on select bicycles and accessories all through the month of February. Time to say adieu to our fleet of rental bikes (to make room for new ones.) These sturdy workhorses from Brooklyn Bicycle Co. have served us well. It's a great chance to get a Dutch style city bike for very little money. Prices start at $250. We also have a handful of new bikes greatly marked down like a Brooklyn Bicycle Co. Willow 7 speed step-through frame originally $750 reduced to $550. We have one Simcoe Basic Roadster 3 speed step-over frame originally $700 now $500. Canadian company Simcoe makes stylish, classic bikes with beautiful details and durable paint finishes. For a tall kid or small adult we have a Torker U-3 in a 44cm frame. It's a 3 speed internal geared bike with a racier geometry and drop bars. Originally $500 reduced to $325. And we've knocked down the price of our last SE Wildman 20" bmx bike. Yours for $284.26 including tax for this popular kid's bike. As for accessories, all of our Racktime bags and panniers are 30% off. German company Racktime makes practical gear for commuters like the Side One Urban and Work It Wide that look good on the bike right into the office. A selection of Basil bags and panniers are also 30% off. Dutch company Basil is a shop favorite because of their bright and fun colors and patterns on items like their Basonyl Double Bag or Jada Mirte Shopper. Quantities are limited and prices quoted do not include sales tax unless otherwise noted. Stop in and test ride a bike Tuesdays through Saturdays.
We've just added some more bikes to our February sale! All Brompton folding bikes are reduced 10% off MSRP and all Pashley bicycles are reduced 15% off MSRP. The sale is good only on bicycles currently in stock.
We've Made Room for More Cargo Bikes: Benno Boost E & Carry On November 09 2016
We're very excited to introduce two new cargo bikes from Benno Bikes: the electric assist Boost E and 27 speed Carry On. Both would be described as mid-tail length, like a "regular" bike but just a little longer, and both come with a beefy rear rack with optional front rack. The rear rack has a maximum carrying load of 110 lbs, so pile on the stuff plus your kid. The 24" wheels lower the center of gravity making it easier to haul goods and the wide tires make the ride more comfortable. While the 27 speed Carry On will be perfect for most folks, the Boost E e-bike with Bosch bottom bracket electric assist motor will provide much needed ease for distance rides or hill climbs.
Benno Baenziger is the namesake behind the new brand. He co-founded Electra Bikes in the early 90s and left the company after it was bought by Trek, "his restless desire to design better bikes and inspire people to ride remained, which lead him to create Benno Bikes in 2015."
We're the only shop in Philadelphia carrying these two bikes. Come check 'em out!
Pure Fix Restocked: Pick One Up September 15 2016
A new semester, a new season, a new bike in a NEW color. We've just refreshed our stock of Pure Fix single speed bicycles with some of their new color options like "Don," a deep berry red frame with white rims and brown tires, and "Sand," a sandy neutral with matte black rims and brown tires. Pure Fix bikes have been a perennial favorite with Philly students because of their sleek light weight design and affordability. The perfect bike to navigate through busy city streets (don't want to be late for class) and effortlessly carry up steps to stash in a dorm room. But it's not just for students. It's for anyone who wants a quality bike to get from a to b without breaking the bank.
Kick Off to Autumn: September Events August 30 2016
While we hate to say good-bye to summer, we do love when the weather gets cooler. Riding a bike is so much nicer when the air is a little crisper. Now that folks are back from the shore and back to work and school, it's a great time to get your bike in working order or buy a new one. By ditching the car and riding a bike we can cut down on those nasty green house gases that adversely affect our climate. You should check out the Clean Air Council's Greenfest Philly on Sunday, September 11th. We'll be there with some cargo, city, and folding bikes for you to demo so you can get on the green path. Riding a bike is one of the best things you can do for the planet. If your a family of cyclists you can meet up with the Kidical Mass PHL crew & GoPhillyGo for a group ride from Fitler Square to the event at Head House Market. Departure is at 10AM.
For our New York friends, you can find Simon at the bi-annual NY Bike Jumble in Park Slope, Brooklyn on Saturday, September 10th. He'll bring one of his custom frames to show off. If a custom bicycle is an idea you've been bandying about, Simon can build you a beautiful one. His Hanford Cycles have won awards and recognition at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show and Classic Rendevouz. Below is the dog hauling city bike he finished for Mrs. Firth this spring.
And at the end of the month on Thursday, September 29th the Bicycle Coalition is holding their annual gala and awards dinner. We are all indebted to the work the Bike Coalition does to improve and promote cycling in the Philadelphia. You can buy tickets to the event or donate here.
Back by Popular Demand: Pure City Bikes July 19 2016
We just couldn't stay away from stocking Pure City bicycles: practical, stylish, and affordable. When your customers ask for it then you gotta deliver. We have a few in each size, step over and step through. Ready to go or available to order.
Bike theft is rampant in the city and those statistics get higher during the summer. Who wants to buy a new bike with the fear of it being stolen? For starters investing in a really good lock can minimize your chances of that new bike disappearing. Don't get the $10 one from the corner store, get one that's legit. Abus locks come in all shapes, sizes, and strengths. Any of their locks will get you by during the day while your at work or run to the store. At night it's a different story. ANY lock is vulnerable. And if you keep your bike locked up outdoors overnight your risk of getting it stolen increases drastically. Some people are lucky to have backyards big enough for a bike but keep in mind thieves can climb that fence just as easily as cut that lock. If this is the only place you can store a bike then you should get a couple of heavy duty locks like the Abus Ivy pictured below. Make sure it's locked to something secure like the Abus Granit Floor Anchor.
Bringing your bike indoors is the safest solution but so many people don't do this. It's true storage space can be a problem in a city home but if you've made that lifestyle change to ditch the car and ride a bike then the least you can do is protect your investment. Think of your bike as a work of art and display it proudly. Why not buy a bike that matches your living room or bedroom decor? Or make a statement with a brightly colored bike like the Sun Skylar 5 speed step-through. Linus and Pure Cycles have a lot of color options. There are tons of storage devices out there from simple hooks that screw into a wall stud or ceiling joist to fancy shelves and ceiling pulleys. Take a look at Pinterest for more storage ideas. Still think that bike won't fit in your space? A bike like the Brompton folds neatly to 26" x 24" package that can be stored anywhere. And it's virtually theft free because you take it where ever you go: train, bus, office, store, or restaurant.
Kick Off Summer with 20% Off Linus Bikes May 13 2016
Philadelphia is a great biking city, especially in summer. It's the best way to get around to all the summer hot spots like Spruce Street Harbor Park, the PHS pop up beer garden on South Street, and the Schuylkill River Trail to name a few. And if Open Streets Philly takes off, you'll definitely want a bike. Starting May 17th until the end of the month all of our Linus bikes will be 20% off MSRP. It's a great time to pick up that Mixte 8 speed you've had your eye on, originally $829 reduced to $663. Or perhaps that Roadster Sport 3 speed, originally $599 reduced to $479. And kids bikes are on sale too. Lil Roadster 16 and Lil Dutchi 16 originally $289 reduced to $231. You can check out what we have in stock here but more sizes and colors are on the way (and we can always order what we don't have.) Don't miss out on this!
(Prices shown before taxes and sale is good on bicycles bought in store only.)
Now That's a Damn Fine Looking Bike March 31 2016
We love the Linus Roadster 8 not just because it's a practical bike for the city with 8 internal gears or that it has full fitted fenders and room for a front basket or rear rack plus a couple of pannier bags. And we don't love it because it's priced to sell at $829 plus tax. We love it because it just looks so damn good (especially against this yellow and grey wall) and rides real nice. It has all the style of a classic English bike but much lighter than an older bike because of the chromoly tubing. The brown faux leather saddle and grips add a bit of panache but we wouldn't stop you if you wanted to class it up even further with say a Brooks leather saddle and some coordinating Brooks leather grips. And if you're still not convinced this is a totally awesome bike check out this review from Bicycle Times.
Bicycles and Business Work Well Together March 18 2016
Indego isn't the only bike share in town. Some hotels and condominiums, like Dranoff Lofts, provide bikes for their residents. We just gave their fleet a tune up and can do the same for your fleet. Cycling as a mode of transportation is a trend that keeps growing and is here to stay. Businesses that incorporate and promote the use of bicycles are another lasting trend. It makes sense, particularly in a city like Philadelphia. With very little hill climbing it's so easy to get around town by bike and it's often the most efficient means. If you're interested in incorporating bicycles into your business we can help you choose the right one (or more,) whether it's a half dozen three speed city bikes or a cargo bike or two. We can outfit the bikes with baskets, racks, bells, locks, and lights too.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands... March 05 2016
Spring flowers have started popping up in Holland and Dutch people are out riding their bikes enjoying this sensual feast. Here, the Philadelphia Flower Show marks the unofficial beginning of spring. Thousands of people flock to the show because there's nothing like looking at and smelling flowers to put one in a seasonal mood. The actual first day of spring isn't far away though, just another 15 days. Now's a good time to get your bike tuned up or buy a new one so you're ready to go when the warm weather decides to stick around. We carry a large assortment of products to make your bike practical like the one pictured. We have oodles of baskets and panniers (a great way to transport your garden flowers) from Basil, Ortlieb, Wald, and more. Since you'll want to bring your kid along to help you choose between red tulips or pink hyacinth, we have seats for one year olds on up (like the one pictured above) from Yepp and Bobike. And we get new stuff in all the time.
A Box for Your Bike August 01 2015
While you're taking advantage of our great sale on Brooklyn Bicycle Co. bikes why not pick up one of their signature wooden boxes to carry your gear. Attach it to the rear rack and start piling in all your important stuff: books, beers, bagels, beignets, beers...you get the idea. $40
Featured Product of the Week: Racktime Boxit February 20 2015
Most folks have heard of Ortlieb, the German manufacturer of great waterproof panniers and bags. Well let us introduce you to their sibling, Racktime. Like Ortlieb, Racktime makes bags and panniers but also baskets and containers, like the Boxit pictured, that fit onto their proprietary front and rear racks with their Snapit System. This means the rack and container work like one to fully support the load you're carrying. The Boxit is a two in one container: load your gear in the rigid plastic tray and place securely in the tubular frame or don't use the tray. Your choice. We like the way the Boxit looks and we like that it has a load capacity of up to 50lbs. Comes in two size options: large (approximately 21" x 14" x 6") and small (approximately 18" x 12" x 6".)
