Cycle Gear For Your Sweetie! February 09 2017
Cycling is for lovers. Forget flowers, chocolates, or diamonds; your cycling sweetie will be much happier with something for the bike. Basil makes gorgeous and practical cycling gear like the floribunda patterned Bloom Carry All bag. You can still give your special someone flowers but ones that will last for many, many years. A Brooks leather saddle will also last a very long time (like your love) and this red B17 kinda even looks like a heart (if you squint a little.) Keep in mind, should it break (the saddle that is) we can mend it. One of the most important cycling accessories one should probably have is a helmet. With this Nutcase Pink Cheetah helmet you'll be saying, "I love your brain.I really do." Maybe it's just time to part and move on....to a new bike. This Pure City Melrose 3 speed step through bicycle comes in a deep, rich red and is fully equipped with fenders, chain guard, rack, and bell. Its super comfortable too and just screams, "ride me through town and back!"
Don't forget we have a selection of bicycles and bike accessories on sale until the end of February.
Because we want you to feel the love (of cycling), we'll be having a sale on select bicycles and accessories all through the month of February. Time to say adieu to our fleet of rental bikes (to make room for new ones.) These sturdy workhorses from Brooklyn Bicycle Co. have served us well. It's a great chance to get a Dutch style city bike for very little money. Prices start at $250. We also have a handful of new bikes greatly marked down like a Brooklyn Bicycle Co. Willow 7 speed step-through frame originally $750 reduced to $550. We have one Simcoe Basic Roadster 3 speed step-over frame originally $700 now $500. Canadian company Simcoe makes stylish, classic bikes with beautiful details and durable paint finishes. For a tall kid or small adult we have a Torker U-3 in a 44cm frame. It's a 3 speed internal geared bike with a racier geometry and drop bars. Originally $500 reduced to $325. And we've knocked down the price of our last SE Wildman 20" bmx bike. Yours for $284.26 including tax for this popular kid's bike. As for accessories, all of our Racktime bags and panniers are 30% off. German company Racktime makes practical gear for commuters like the Side One Urban and Work It Wide that look good on the bike right into the office. A selection of Basil bags and panniers are also 30% off. Dutch company Basil is a shop favorite because of their bright and fun colors and patterns on items like their Basonyl Double Bag or Jada Mirte Shopper. Quantities are limited and prices quoted do not include sales tax unless otherwise noted. Stop in and test ride a bike Tuesdays through Saturdays.
We've just added some more bikes to our February sale! All Brompton folding bikes are reduced 10% off MSRP and all Pashley bicycles are reduced 15% off MSRP. The sale is good only on bicycles currently in stock.
Our Little Cargo Bike Made In Philadelphia January 06 2017
Towards the end of 2016 we were awarded a grant from The Merchants Fund to manufacture cargo bikes. The Merchants Fund has been helping small Philadelphia businesses sustain and grow by issuing a select number of grants twice a year. We applied for funding to cover the cost of materials for seven complete cargo bikes. The 20/20 is what were calling the bike right now but that could change. It's adapted from a bike David designed and made some years ago. Simon of Hanford Cycles will cut, miter, and weld the frames and our mechanics will finish up with components.
It's a compact, short wheel based bike with 20 inch wheels and cargo capacity in the front and rear. The smaller wheels bring the carrying load down low making it easy to handle. Various containers or platforms can be attached; whatever is needed to hold your stuff. It's a great bike for a business or anyone who doesn't want to use a car all the time. You may have seen our prototype out and about this Fall. We had some of our friends, like the cargo bike courier company Sparrow Cycling, try it out and give us feedback. Check out their Instagram for more photos and great reviews. Now that we have all the materials and parts, we can start cutting the tubes; expect to see some finished this Spring. If you think this is something you could use for yourself or your business, call, email, or stop by the shop and take it for a test ride.

Getting Ready for the Countdown December 29 2016
There's still time to pick up a new bike or much need accessory before the end of the year. We have a good stock of SE bmx bikes like Big Ripper, STR Quadangle 29, or OM Duro (more 2017 silver So Cal Flyers expected early January!) If you've been dreaming of a cargo bike we have the new Benno Bikes Carry On and it's e-cousin, Boost. We have new stock of waterproof bags from Ortlieb and Carradice. And we always have a wide range of Brooks saddles, bar tape, and grips. Plus loads of other cargo bikes, family bikes, folding bikes, city bikes, kids bikes, and accessories.
We hope you all have a crazy fun (or pleasantly quiet) and safe New Year's celebration. We will be closing at 2pm on 12/31 and closed on New Year's Day. See you on the other side!
Carradice Canvas Bicycle Saddlebags Restocked December 01 2016
We've finally gotten in some of the more popular Carradice bags and rain capes (just in time for you know what?!) Handmade in a small factory in Lancashire, England, Carradice bags haven't changed much since the 1930s when they were born. As the saying goes, don't fix what isn't broken. And if one does "break" (like a strap or a snap) you can send it back to the factory for repair. In addition to best sellers like the Nelson Long Flap and Barley, we've brought in the more minimal Junior and it's slightly larger cousin Cadet. Stay dry in the Philly winter drizzle with their traditional wax canvas rain cape in standard size or super. Looks nice tucked into their classic cape roll. Want a small bag with a bit more panache? We have one zip roll with Harris Tweed left in stock. All are waterproof.
Xtracycle Edgerunner for Carrying Everyone and Everything August 20 2016
Back in stock Xtracycle Edgerunner 24D small in black. This latest generation of the Edgerunner comes equipped with Flight Deck, Carry All bags and Kickback, ready to ride out and load up. Add their new Porter Rack and Porter Pack to increase your carrying power.
This new rack attaches to the head tube of the bike frame which adds stability when carrying heavy loads. The minimal design allows you to carry (along with some straps) over sized items that wouldn't fit in a traditional basket.
Going to a picnic and need to bring the food and drink? The Porter Pack has a padded lining that provides insulation and has all kinds of additional pockets for water bottles, mobile phone, locks, whatever.
And of course don't forget the kids. Along with an adapter the Yepp Maxi Easyfit fits perfectly into the Edgerunner's rear rack. For bigger kids just add Hooptie side rails, U-Tube foot rails, and a Magic Carpet for a comfortable ride.
If You Can't Stand the Heat... July 28 2016
Dreaming of escaping the sweltering heat of the city to a cool verdant oasis? Hop on your bike and with your friends and family head to the country for a picnic. For us in Philadelphia heading to the nearest expanse of green and quiet isn't far at all. Fairmount Park has over 9000 acres of parkland right within the city limits. You'll easily find a shady grove to settle down and enjoy the sights and gentle sounds of mother nature. In some spots, like Cresheim Valley Creek pictured, you'd never know you were still in a major metropolis.
We have the bikes and gear just right for transporting your picnic fare. Green Guru make bags and panniers out of recycled materials. Try their Carbon Cooler to keep food from spoiling.
A crate on a rear rack is a great solution for hauling beverages. Pure City's wooden crate fits beautifully on the rear rack of a Pure City Bourbon and is perfect for carrying a six pack of your favorite sip.
A Cargo Bike Manufactured in Fishtown USA May 05 2016
Fishtown used to be a center of manufacturing in Philadelphia in the 19th and early 20th centuries but that pretty much went away when factories moved to the suburbs and beyond. After moving into a former elevator factory we knew the space would be ideal to fabricate our signature short wheel base cargo bike. That's the start of it above. It doesn't have a name yet and we don't know the price yet but we do know it'll be awesome and extremely useful. It's based on a custom bike that David designed and built a few years back. The long horizontal center tube not only looks neat but will support the front and rear cargo racks and add a bit of strength to the frame. It'll have 20" wheels front and rear that will allow for a lower center of gravity and make hauling home a few cases of beer, and maybe other stuff, a breeze. It'll come in two size options but only one color. Which leads us to our biggest dilemma; what color should we paint the bike? Any ideas?
Every time that you ride your bike instead of drive your car is a celebration of mother earth. You deserve a high five for that. You can get to where you need to go by bike AND take your stuff with you. There's no excuse anymore. We have lots of gear to carry that stuff. Here are some new items in stock. We're excited to have an assortment of bags and baskets from Linus. Starting with the Sac, it's a great looking bag made of water-resistant treated canvas that attaches to a rear rack while on the bike with carrying handle and optional shoulder strap when off. We've got it in sand/black or navy/aqua with other colors available to order. If you don't need to take too much with you then the Pipette or Pouch is just the thing. Keys, phone, credit card and off you go. The Pipette shown in navy can go beneath your saddle or on your handlebar and when off the bike carried with the wrist strap. We love it's shape; you could fit a hot dog in there! The versatile Pouch shown in army green can be strapped to your handlebar, top tube, or beneath your saddle. Stopping at the farmers market to pick up some locally grown veg is NBD with the Wire Basket shown in iron. Hook onto your rack, take off with the handle. Plus we have a couple of their lovely wicker baskets not pictured.
For those who like a bit more pop Basil of The Netherlands has some pretty new prints on their rear panniers. This Wanderlust single carry all bag is available in ivory with an all-over pattern of birds, butterflies, and flowers (mother earth loves mother nature.) We also have the Wanderlust double pannier bags, same design but on a charcoal background. All that pattern and color not your thing? We've restocked some of our more popular Ortlieb bags like the Velocity Backpack in dark grey, pictured, and, not pictured, the Bike Shopper also in dark grey or a deep red. Ortlieb will always keep your stuff dry if caught in a downpour. Stop by the shop and check 'em out.
Now That's a Damn Fine Looking Bike March 31 2016
We love the Linus Roadster 8 not just because it's a practical bike for the city with 8 internal gears or that it has full fitted fenders and room for a front basket or rear rack plus a couple of pannier bags. And we don't love it because it's priced to sell at $829 plus tax. We love it because it just looks so damn good (especially against this yellow and grey wall) and rides real nice. It has all the style of a classic English bike but much lighter than an older bike because of the chromoly tubing. The brown faux leather saddle and grips add a bit of panache but we wouldn't stop you if you wanted to class it up even further with say a Brooks leather saddle and some coordinating Brooks leather grips. And if you're still not convinced this is a totally awesome bike check out this review from Bicycle Times.
Paris newspapers were traditionally delivered by bicycle using a porteur or transport rack. It's a flat rack that mounts to the front of the bike usually at the fork, sometimes the handle bars, with support struts mounted at the axle or lower down on the fork. Because it's flat it can work with drop bars where a basket won't fit and it allows you to carry over size loads like a stack of newspapers or, more likely, a case of beer. We carry four of these style racks. Wald Multi-fit aka pizza rack $52 attaches to your handlebar so better suited to a bike with upright bars. It's extra wide with a low rail on three sides and has axle mounted support struts. The Origin8 Platform rack $62 is made of aluminum and sits lower than the Wald rack because it attaches to the top of the fork. It has adjustable struts and no rails to get in the way. Basil's Portland Rack comes without side rails $80 or with rails for $95 and has it's own wide canvas cargo strap. Velo Orange's Porteur Rack $162 is the most authentic of the three. Made of polished stainless steel tubing so it won't rust and comes with an optional rail. It can can be used in conjunction with front panniers to carry even more. Remember you'll need something to keep all that stuff on the rack. We have an assortment of bungees and cargo straps to choose from.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands... March 05 2016
Spring flowers have started popping up in Holland and Dutch people are out riding their bikes enjoying this sensual feast. Here, the Philadelphia Flower Show marks the unofficial beginning of spring. Thousands of people flock to the show because there's nothing like looking at and smelling flowers to put one in a seasonal mood. The actual first day of spring isn't far away though, just another 15 days. Now's a good time to get your bike tuned up or buy a new one so you're ready to go when the warm weather decides to stick around. We carry a large assortment of products to make your bike practical like the one pictured. We have oodles of baskets and panniers (a great way to transport your garden flowers) from Basil, Ortlieb, Wald, and more. Since you'll want to bring your kid along to help you choose between red tulips or pink hyacinth, we have seats for one year olds on up (like the one pictured above) from Yepp and Bobike. And we get new stuff in all the time.
Transform Your Old Bike Into a Cargo Hauling Machine January 26 2016
With Xtracycle's FreeRadical you can turn an ordinary bike into a long tail cargo bike. It's an extension of the rear triangle using your existing rear wheel. The beauty of this is that you don't need to invest a lot of bucks in a new bike. We have a couple of the original FreeRadicals in stock. They've been out of production for a while so now's the time to pick one up before they're gone for good. It's ideal for hauling stuff (or bigger kids with the addition of U-tube foot rest and cushion.) We're selling the FreeRadical extension along with platform, bag, and kickstand for $400 (the combined group usually retails for $470.) Come in and try it out. We have one set up on a 26" wheeled Kona Cinder Cone (also on sale!) Call or stop in for more info.
Bicycle Commuter Bags That Don't Look Like Bicycle Commuter Bags December 05 2015
(Pictured left to right: Workit pannier, Shopit bag, and Side Two Urban pannier.)
Racktime makes some fantastic bags geared towards commuters. Their line of tweed bags don't look like the average pannier or rack top bag. Pop one of these off your rack, sling it over your arm, and head into the office with style. No one would ever guess you've just gotten off your bike. The large Workit Wide is a roomy briefcase/pannier with lots of pockets, one dedicated to protect a laptop or tablet, adjustable and comfortable carrying strap, and reflective details to make you visible. The Side One Urban (not pictured) and Side Two Urban are more stream lined and minimal panniers but still roomy and come with a waterproof cover. The Shopit sits securely on top of Racktime's Foldit rack with their signature Snap-it system and has a draw string cover to keep your valuables from bouncing out. Bags come in grey or brown tweed. Prices start at $60.
North St Bags: Made in America August 29 2015
North St make bags for your bike (and back) in a small factory in Portland Oregon. We have their Grocery Panniers in copper or black. They're made of 1000D waterproof Cordura fabric and have D rings on either side for an additional shoulder strap. Bags are $59, shoulder straps $15 (tax not included.)
A Box for Your Bike August 01 2015
While you're taking advantage of our great sale on Brooklyn Bicycle Co. bikes why not pick up one of their signature wooden boxes to carry your gear. Attach it to the rear rack and start piling in all your important stuff: books, beers, bagels, beignets, beers...you get the idea. $40
