Our Little Cargo Bike Made In Philadelphia January 06 2017
Towards the end of 2016 we were awarded a grant from The Merchants Fund to manufacture cargo bikes. The Merchants Fund has been helping small Philadelphia businesses sustain and grow by issuing a select number of grants twice a year. We applied for funding to cover the cost of materials for seven complete cargo bikes. The 20/20 is what were calling the bike right now but that could change. It's adapted from a bike David designed and made some years ago. Simon of Hanford Cycles will cut, miter, and weld the frames and our mechanics will finish up with components.
It's a compact, short wheel based bike with 20 inch wheels and cargo capacity in the front and rear. The smaller wheels bring the carrying load down low making it easy to handle. Various containers or platforms can be attached; whatever is needed to hold your stuff. It's a great bike for a business or anyone who doesn't want to use a car all the time. You may have seen our prototype out and about this Fall. We had some of our friends, like the cargo bike courier company Sparrow Cycling, try it out and give us feedback. Check out their Instagram for more photos and great reviews. Now that we have all the materials and parts, we can start cutting the tubes; expect to see some finished this Spring. If you think this is something you could use for yourself or your business, call, email, or stop by the shop and take it for a test ride.

Getting Ready for the Countdown December 29 2016
There's still time to pick up a new bike or much need accessory before the end of the year. We have a good stock of SE bmx bikes like Big Ripper, STR Quadangle 29, or OM Duro (more 2017 silver So Cal Flyers expected early January!) If you've been dreaming of a cargo bike we have the new Benno Bikes Carry On and it's e-cousin, Boost. We have new stock of waterproof bags from Ortlieb and Carradice. And we always have a wide range of Brooks saddles, bar tape, and grips. Plus loads of other cargo bikes, family bikes, folding bikes, city bikes, kids bikes, and accessories.
We hope you all have a crazy fun (or pleasantly quiet) and safe New Year's celebration. We will be closing at 2pm on 12/31 and closed on New Year's Day. See you on the other side!
We've Made Room for More Cargo Bikes: Benno Boost E & Carry On November 09 2016
We're very excited to introduce two new cargo bikes from Benno Bikes: the electric assist Boost E and 27 speed Carry On. Both would be described as mid-tail length, like a "regular" bike but just a little longer, and both come with a beefy rear rack with optional front rack. The rear rack has a maximum carrying load of 110 lbs, so pile on the stuff plus your kid. The 24" wheels lower the center of gravity making it easier to haul goods and the wide tires make the ride more comfortable. While the 27 speed Carry On will be perfect for most folks, the Boost E e-bike with Bosch bottom bracket electric assist motor will provide much needed ease for distance rides or hill climbs.
Benno Baenziger is the namesake behind the new brand. He co-founded Electra Bikes in the early 90s and left the company after it was bought by Trek, "his restless desire to design better bikes and inspire people to ride remained, which lead him to create Benno Bikes in 2015."
We're the only shop in Philadelphia carrying these two bikes. Come check 'em out!
This Philadelphia Bike Shop Is Not Like the Others August 25 2016
When we work on a bike whether it's a tune up, a new bike build, or fabricating a custom bicycle we put our all into it. Even if that means lying on your coworkers skateboard to get to that hard to reach spot. Our mechanics are very knowledgeable when it comes to bicycle repair but they're also creative and always come up with a solution. We're lucky to have the tools in our workshop as well as our frame shop to fix just about anything. Not every bike shop can do that. Big, heavy bikes like the Babboe City cargo bike that Carlyssa is building (see photo) are easily hoisted up with our EVT workstands. Cracks in frames can be repaired in our welding shop. You don't have to toss away your beloved and broken-in Brooks saddle because a rail broke. We have the parts to fix it. If you can't find what you need from our vast stock of city and cargo bikes we have the capability to build you a custom model. And no other bike shop in Philadelphia can do that.

Xtracycle Edgerunner for Carrying Everyone and Everything August 20 2016
Back in stock Xtracycle Edgerunner 24D small in black. This latest generation of the Edgerunner comes equipped with Flight Deck, Carry All bags and Kickback, ready to ride out and load up. Add their new Porter Rack and Porter Pack to increase your carrying power.
This new rack attaches to the head tube of the bike frame which adds stability when carrying heavy loads. The minimal design allows you to carry (along with some straps) over sized items that wouldn't fit in a traditional basket.
Going to a picnic and need to bring the food and drink? The Porter Pack has a padded lining that provides insulation and has all kinds of additional pockets for water bottles, mobile phone, locks, whatever.
And of course don't forget the kids. Along with an adapter the Yepp Maxi Easyfit fits perfectly into the Edgerunner's rear rack. For bigger kids just add Hooptie side rails, U-Tube foot rails, and a Magic Carpet for a comfortable ride.
Don't Let the Heat Get You Down, Lighten Up August 10 2016
With this oppressive heat and humidity we got going on here in Philadelphia the last thing we want is heavy. Here are a few light weight products that won't drag you down. The Abus Granit Futura Mini lock is featherweight compared to it's welterweight cousins but still as strong. Nutcase added it's Metroride line of helmets as a lighter alternative to their Street Helmet. Super lightweight and with a slim profile you'll forget you have it on (but don't worry you still do; your head is protected.) GoCycling's sweat-wicking cycling cap is gossamer. And with it's Philadelphia graphics you'll be representing the City Of Brotherly Love in the coolest possible way. Think all cargo bikes literally weigh a ton? The Boda Boda V3 by Yuba is one of the lightest compact cargo bikes on the market. Starting at 41lbs (before add-ons) it can easily be lifted up steps to store indoors where it's safest. The newest version can now hold two Yepp Maxi Easyfit kid seats on the back and there's still room for one Yepp Mini up front. That's three kids you can haul around town on this zippy bike.
If You Can't Stand the Heat... July 28 2016
Dreaming of escaping the sweltering heat of the city to a cool verdant oasis? Hop on your bike and with your friends and family head to the country for a picnic. For us in Philadelphia heading to the nearest expanse of green and quiet isn't far at all. Fairmount Park has over 9000 acres of parkland right within the city limits. You'll easily find a shady grove to settle down and enjoy the sights and gentle sounds of mother nature. In some spots, like Cresheim Valley Creek pictured, you'd never know you were still in a major metropolis.
We have the bikes and gear just right for transporting your picnic fare. Green Guru make bags and panniers out of recycled materials. Try their Carbon Cooler to keep food from spoiling.
A crate on a rear rack is a great solution for hauling beverages. Pure City's wooden crate fits beautifully on the rear rack of a Pure City Bourbon and is perfect for carrying a six pack of your favorite sip.
A Cargo Bike Manufactured in Fishtown USA May 05 2016
Fishtown used to be a center of manufacturing in Philadelphia in the 19th and early 20th centuries but that pretty much went away when factories moved to the suburbs and beyond. After moving into a former elevator factory we knew the space would be ideal to fabricate our signature short wheel base cargo bike. That's the start of it above. It doesn't have a name yet and we don't know the price yet but we do know it'll be awesome and extremely useful. It's based on a custom bike that David designed and built a few years back. The long horizontal center tube not only looks neat but will support the front and rear cargo racks and add a bit of strength to the frame. It'll have 20" wheels front and rear that will allow for a lower center of gravity and make hauling home a few cases of beer, and maybe other stuff, a breeze. It'll come in two size options but only one color. Which leads us to our biggest dilemma; what color should we paint the bike? Any ideas?
Ride Into the Comfort Zone April 29 2016
Cradle your littler ones in comfort and safety with the Babboe Cargo Toddler Seat. Available in silver, blue, or dark grey and specifically designed for Babboe Cargo bikes, the toddler seat shell is made of dense but cushion-y foam that can withstand the impact of a collision should one occur. It also provides neck and back support, super important when sleepy heads nod off. Its easy to install, just make sure to leave some space for the rain tent, but we can always do that for you. And, as a heads up, another Babboe Big Cargo Tricycle and Babboe Big Raintent are on their way!
Bicycles and Business Work Well Together March 18 2016
Indego isn't the only bike share in town. Some hotels and condominiums, like Dranoff Lofts, provide bikes for their residents. We just gave their fleet a tune up and can do the same for your fleet. Cycling as a mode of transportation is a trend that keeps growing and is here to stay. Businesses that incorporate and promote the use of bicycles are another lasting trend. It makes sense, particularly in a city like Philadelphia. With very little hill climbing it's so easy to get around town by bike and it's often the most efficient means. If you're interested in incorporating bicycles into your business we can help you choose the right one (or more,) whether it's a half dozen three speed city bikes or a cargo bike or two. We can outfit the bikes with baskets, racks, bells, locks, and lights too.
Everyone in Fishtown is starting to get pumped for this year's Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival on Saturday May 21st. Now is the time to register if you fancy making a ridiculous human powered machine that will bring laughter and glee to many, many people. And we mean many. Thousands of people flock to the neighborhood every spring for one of Philadelphia's most popular events. We just happen to have this insane looking (kinda reminds me of an oversize Ouija board planchette) and even more insane riding tandem tricycle available to a kinetic sculptor for FREE! You have to see it to believe it. Come to the shop and check it out. And while you're here, check out our stock of awesome city and cargo bikes because the warm weather is on it's way. If your coming from outside the city for the Kinetic Sculpture Derby and Arts Festival why not rent a bike from us? It's a great way to get around Fishtown for the events.
Transform Your Old Bike Into a Cargo Hauling Machine January 26 2016
With Xtracycle's FreeRadical you can turn an ordinary bike into a long tail cargo bike. It's an extension of the rear triangle using your existing rear wheel. The beauty of this is that you don't need to invest a lot of bucks in a new bike. We have a couple of the original FreeRadicals in stock. They've been out of production for a while so now's the time to pick one up before they're gone for good. It's ideal for hauling stuff (or bigger kids with the addition of U-tube foot rest and cushion.) We're selling the FreeRadical extension along with platform, bag, and kickstand for $400 (the combined group usually retails for $470.) Come in and try it out. We have one set up on a 26" wheeled Kona Cinder Cone (also on sale!) Call or stop in for more info.

Not just for wannabe postmen only but a practical work horse with big front cargo container and sturdy rack that you can attach (for an additional cost) the substantial and authentic Royal Mail panniers made by Carradice (the English cycling bag makers.)
